SILENT FUTURES

Community-Based Speculative Design Through Body Language

Category: Embodied Interfaces & Responsive Environments
Year: 2023 | frog Design, SXSW Pop-Up Party

Interactive installation using silent body language via digital sensors to collectively envision futures. Three stations explored AI/humanity, public activism, climate change through temperature sensors, gesture recognition, and physical dials affecting shared sound frequency particle visuals.

Key Innovation: Silent, embodied future-building. Removing verbal language forced participants to think through sensation and action. Physical engagement created embodied understanding unavailable through discourse alone.

Technical Implementation:

  • Temperature sensors (metaphor: warmth = care/connection)

  • MediaPipe gesture recognition (collective gesture = solidarity)

  • Physical dial (urgency/commitment level)

  • p5.js particle systems responding to sensor data

  • 300+ participants over 4 hours

My Role: Lead developer—sensor integration, visual programming, Arduino, p5.js, collaborative design with strategists.

Contribution to RNI Research: Public engagement as research practice—democratizing technology discussion ensures broader communities shape ethical frameworks. Technology should be accessible, experiential, participatory.

Technologies: p5.js, MediaPipe, Arduino, temperature sensors, rotary encoders
